What is Income Tax Return?

An Income Tax Return (ITR) is a form/forms used to file income tax with the Income Tax Department. It is essentially a worksheet form where you declare the source of your income and the amount you earn in a financial year. Every working individual who falls in the tax slab is liable to file ITR with the IT dept. 31st July is the yearly deadline for filing ITRs for salaried individuals and businesses. However, it’s not just one form that has to be submitted, there are different forms that must be chosen according to the category the taxpayer falls in.

Types of ITR Forms:

  • ITR-1 (Sahaj)

For Individuals having Income from Salaries, one house property, other sources (Interest etc.) and having total income upto Rs.50 lakh

  • ITR-2

For Individuals and HUFs not carrying out business or profession under any proprietorship

  • ITR-3

For individuals and HUFs having income from a proprietary business or profession

  • ITR-4 (Sugam)

For presumptive income from Business & Profession

  • ITR-5

For persons other than,- (i) individual, (ii) HUF, (iii) company and (iv) person filing Form ITR-7

  • ITR-6

For Companies other than companies claiming exemption under section 11

  • ITR-7

For persons including companies required to furnish return under sections 139(4A) or 139(4B) or 139(4C) or 139(4D) or 139(4E) or 139(4F)

Documents Required:

  1. Pan Card
  2. Aadhar Card
  3. Bank Account Statement
  4. Bank details ( bank account no, IFSC code, branch name etc) of all the accounts held by the Assessee.
  5. If you are a salaried person, Form 16
  6. Details of savings / investment / donations (if any)
  7. Details of any Advance Tax deposited
  8. Detail of TDS deducted on such income
  9. Detail of income from sources like interest on fixed deposit, commission/brokerage earned, tution fee.
  10. Mobile Number and Mail id of Assessee.
  11. Present address
  12. Any other detail as required
