First you need to check the notification issued by the National Highways Authority, and approach the concerned Land Acquisition Officer with regard to your land along with your copy of your sale deed. If you can convince them, you are entitled to compensation / return of un used land.

Notification of Highway Authorities could make the things better. Pricure that document and approach the concerned authorities, who own the land with a proposal the area beyond your Sale Deed. Revenue Records can also also help in execution of your plans.
