My mom's dad bought a house on her wife's name in 2000 and died in 2004. Property is in Bihar. Now Mom's mother wants to transfer the property to her daughter (my mom). I have been advised to go for Gift deed registration but this attracts heavy cost (stamp and registration fee) the same as selling/buying a property. Would there be any way to transfer the ownership without this much of cost involved? Or what other option can I have in making the ownership transfer? Thanks in advance or your valuable input.

It is the safest possible way to get the Registered Gift Deed executed as it will give you a good marketable title and a document useful for all practical purposes. But if your circumstances permit get a registered Will executed from your Grandmother in favour of your Mother.
